Hungary 2018 - Places to Visit

This was my very first time visiting my husband's home country. I did not know what to expect and I was hoping that I will actually like it, which in fact I did - more like love it rather than like now. We stayed in Eger and went around with a car. I must admit that this was the most relaxing holiday I ever had, as my husband knew the place and we did not need to worry on how we are going to get to places etc. But here are some places which we visited and we think that you should too!

Fortress of Sirok

If you are looking for both some history and a nice view, then this is the right place for you. As the name implies, this is found in Sirok, a historical village in Heves county. As for history, one can visit the ruins of the 13th century fortress. It has been renovated and open to the public. The fortress has a medieval structure with an irregular floor plan, inner towers, with pitfalls and tunnels crisscrossing it . The building of the castle started after the Mongol invasion and it was proclaimed to be a royal castle in the 14th Century. When we travel, we mostly look for greenery and views, so when we walked up to the small square from the main entrance, there were 2 options:

  • Visit the castle

  • Visit a path on the opposite side which you have no idea where it leads to.

So we opted to be a little bit adventurous and see where the path leads to. It was one of the best ideas. It led to a big rock in a form of a nest where you can see the Castle of Sirok and also a breathtaking view as you can see in the photos. Before the 'nest' you will encounter two standing rocks, which in turn are called: the Brother and the Nun

In the 'nest'

Kékestető

This is known to be the highest mountain in Hungary (1,014m above sea level), so it is obviously a must to visit. In all honesty, I was expecting to see an amazing view as I have seen at Sirok, but it is not the case. Although, it is always nice to say 'oh I have been to the highest point in Hungary'. As like the Castle of Sirok, this is situated in Heves county. For those of you who love bikes or cars and are travelling with one too, then make sure to visit this place. Reason being is that the road towards the top of the mountain has a lot of twists and turns, which is an absolute blast on a bike. BUT please make sure that you are a confident rider and have experience as there are a lot of blind corners and if you take one single turn wrong, you might end up in an unpleasant situation. As you can imagine this is very famous with bikers, so you will definitely meet up with others with the same interest as you.

Santa Clause Factory

This place is called so because one can see deers and other wild animals. There is closed off area with an overview bridge, where you can observe and even hand feed the animals of the forest as they used to it and not afraid of humans. A small train also passes through, which is very nice to see.

Lillafüred and Lake Hámori

We decided to group them together, as they are very close to each other. In Lillafüred you find the Palace with the hanging gardens, situated in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county. It is right below the hotel between the streams Szinva and Garadna. Here you can also find the highest waterfall in Hungary - 20m. Although, the waterfall itself is artificial as normally it goes under the cliff built by the water.

Lake Hámori is an artificial lake formed in the early 19th century by the damming of the water of Szinva and Garadna, to supply the iron furnace with water. The lake is 1.5 kilometres long. In the summer, boats and paddle boats can be rented.

Lake Szikla-forrás

The photo below speaks on its own for this lovely lake. This lake is created and fed by the nearby fresh water spring which is drinkable.

On our last day we decided to lay back and relax. Therefore, we went to this lake close by, had a lovely walk and sat on the grass admiring natures beauty.
