Public Transport

As any other country, Malta has public transport. Due to being a small island, we only have busses, thus no trams or trains. The public transport can easily accessed through an app called: Tal-linja. In this app all you need to do is give it the location where you are (which can be tracked through your location tracker on your phone) and the place where you wish to go. Not just the locality but you can also input landmarks. This will guide you to the nearest bus stop, with the bus number you have to catch and also at which bus stop you have to stop. The app also shows you how long until the next bus will arrive.

There are 3 types of cards which one can purchase while visiting Malta apart from buying a ticket each time, which I do not suggest at it will be too expensive:

  1. ExplorePlus travel card - € 39 - 7 days of unlimited travel on public transport, including direct services from the airport and to various beaches. With the new ExplorePlus travel card, you get 2 trips on the Valletta ferry, where you can admire the spectacular bastions rising from the clear blue sea.Sightseeing options are also included in your ExplorePlus travel card. A full-day tour on the hop-on, hop-off buses visiting Malta’s landmarks is ideal for those would like to learn more about the island, with audio guides available in different languages. Those who would like to enjoy more of the sea can instead take a boat trip to Comino, home of the Blue Lagoon. With the new ExplorePlus travel card, you can choose either one of these options, which will make your holiday complete.

  2. Explore Card - Adults €21, Children €15) - You can go to all of Malta’s sites of interest, in any part of Malta and Gozo. You can hop on or off anytime, as many times as you want, and at any time. This card is valid for travel on day services and night services; So whether you are hitting the beach, visiting Ħaġar Qim, or going to a village festa, the card will offer you unlimited travel, any time of the day.

  3. 12 single day journeys Card - €15 - You can also use this card on Night Services. You can use it for 12 Single Journey Tickets on Day Services or 6 Single Journey Tickets on Night Services, or a combination of both. This card expires within twelve months from first use.

Can be purchased from the Agenda bookshop upon arrival at the airport and even some other localities around Malta as shown in the link: https://www.publictransport.com.mt/en/where-to-buy-explore-card

NOTE: Something important which you should know is that you have to sign at the bus stop in order for the bust to stop. Plus when on the bus you have to press the bell as the bus does not stop on each bus stop otherwise.

Busses are also equipped with AC and free WIFI.

Goto/Blinkee/Whizascoot/Ioscoot

Malta's electric viechal sharing: Goto is for electric cars while the other 3 are electric scooters. These basically do not require deposit and you pay for how much you use them and they each work with the corresponding app. The advantage of Goto besides not having a massive deposit is that it has its own parking spaces all around Malta. Obviously these might require previous registration with the apps, so if you plan to use them make sure you are eligible beforehand.

Websites:

Cool is a car pooling service. Basically picks up people who are going similar directions. So you can get way better prices than going with a taxi. Also it requires the App.

If you still would need to make use of a taxi, the best are ecabs or Bolt - both very efficient and have good prices.

A car/bike can also be rented from the airport. Just be aware that in Malta the traffic is very hectic, there are a lot of accidents and we drive on the right side. So make sure to double check the terms and conditions on the return of the deposit when renting a car, quad or motorcycle.

Gozo Ferry

If you are planning to go to Gozo, then surely you will be making use of the Gozo Ferry located in Cirkewwa (upper part of Malta). It is good to know that you only pay for the trip when you are coming back from Gozo to Malta. In the following link you can find the fare and also the scheduled of the Ferry: https://www.gozochannel.com/ferry/fares/

Money Exchange

This can be done either in banks of Fexserv.
