Ever wondered how you can travel and yet still save money? Well here are 5 tips and tricks how to do so!

1) Choose a Budget Airline

Many times during the year we would want to go abroad for certain occasions, for example;

Budget airlines

birthday or anniversary. The first thing we do is visit the website of budget airlines like Ryan-air and Wizzair. Also we do not choose the destination beforehand, what we do is that we decide on the dates when we want to fly out and come back and check with fare finder which destinations are available and which is the cheapest. As I mentioned in my very first blog we even manage to get long range tickets (back and forth) for €50 each (sometimes even less)! Also try and choose destination where life is cheap.

2) Hand luggage VS no hand luggage

Before my husband and I started travelling together I always had to take either a hand luggage or even a checked-in luggage. I have now realised that this is not needed at all, just a small bag which you can take on board (for free) is simply enough, especially if you are going for a quick get away. You would say: "oh but if you travel in winter the clothes take a lot of space. Yes fair enough but I am sure you would still managed just like I did :3 But we will get to how to pack thing later on. In this manner, you have saved the money you would have spent on the luggage.

3) Accommodation

Airbnb & booking.com

First and foremost you have to check when your flight will land, from there you can check accommodations and compare to the check-in time stipulated. We like to visit the following websites: booking.com and Airbnb. If the flights land late at night/ early morning you can even opt for self check-in accommodations. With that being said, we like to have certain things at the place we will be staying so we tick the following: free wifi, private bathroom and a double bed. From there we start seeing properties , starting from the cheapest. What we look at is the price (obviously), if it is worth the money and how close it is to the city centre or if there is a bus stop close by.

4) Packing

When all the bookings are done, it comes down to the packing and trying to fit everything needed is such a small bag. But believe us, you will manage ;) The main secret is to take ONLY the essentials. First of all, you should not take a whole two outfits (morning and evening) for each day. In Malta it is very humid therefore in summer you can only wear things ones as you will definitely sweat but abroad it is not the same, so a top can be worn twice. Thus, what we do is we take 2 pants (for during the day), a t-shirt for everyday so we will have extra just in case, a nice outfit + light jacket, an extra trainers and a nice pair of shoes. One

Rolled Clothes

of the pants we travel with and take a light jacket in our hands. Then obviously, underwear and other necessities like; shampoo, conditioner and perfume. We put these in small 100ml bottles and for perfume we carry samples with us. What we also carry with us is a rain jacket, as you may never know how the weather changes.

Another way to save a lot of space is to roll your clothes! Honestly it does miracles. If you are unsure of how to roll something specific, just go to YouTube and write: 'how to roll a t-shirt' for example , and you will manage to do it in no time. Plus if you have shoes that cannot be squished then use that space and put rolled underwear in there ;)

Note: It is important that you wear the heavy things (like trainers) and if you are travelling in winter and have a big jacket, then wear it while travelling and do not put it in the bag, in order to save space.

5) Transportation

Always go to places you want to visit on foot or by means of public transport. A lot of countries have mobile apps for public transport which will make your journey around the city easier. That will surely save you quite some money!
